You know it’s a great day when Ms Meacham returns to spin another great story! So good!
Leila is one of the finest writers alive. Her mastery of language is truly wonderful to witness. Great story, too!
Leila Meacham has done it again, this time creating a brilliant romp through history, with beautifully described characters which readers feel they know well; and by the end of the book, they do know them well, having been engrossed participants in the events so marvelously described in perfect English, with a little German and French thrown in. Meacham takes us on a harrying ride through the horrors of Hitler’s madness of World War II and stirs memories of those of us who are old enough to remember the fears evoked by the News Reels at the movies and the stories told on radio news of the atrocities of the conflict. She also incorporates the covert mechanisms employed by the various German and French activists to assist the Allies in defeating the Third Reich and freeing the French, among others.Although this book is filled with strong characters and history, Meacham sets forth the human trauma of existing in circumstances over which one has little or no control, the anguish of loss, and the victory of overcoming. This book has it all –it is a must read and a re-read!!!!!
Although this book marks a departure from her previous multi-generational sagas (Roses, Somerset, etc.), it retains the best of Meacham's skills: believable, finely drawn characters; detailed historical accuracy; and a plot that hooks the reader from the first to last page. Add in WWII espionage, resistance efforts from within the ranks of Hitler's own forces, and glimpses into the "ordinary" lives of American, French, and German people during the war, and the result is an outstanding novel. Highly recommended.
In a world of WWII in novels set in France, this one is different and a winner. Like all of Meacham's novel's it's been meticulously researched. Yes, as one reviewer said, there was a mistake or two in military communication. Big deal! Shakespeare had a clock chime in a play before clocks were even invented! The slips were inconsequential. The plot is great and completely unexpected. As in all of Meacham's novels, the characters are well-developed, although it does take some time to recognize their code names. I thoroughly enjoyed another Meacham "good read." I didn't want to put it down.
